Animal Welfare Institute

If you're interested in donating to any of the numerous animal charities out there, this is one of the best.  "The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) is an American, non-profit, charitable organization founded in 1951 with the goal of reducing pain and fear inflicted on animals by humans. Its legislative division, the Society for Animal Protective Legislation (SAPL), pushes for the passage of laws that reflect this purpose."  Contributions actually go to the cause at hand and not just advertising.
The AWI Quarterly magazine shows a glimpse where your money and efforts go.  "Since 1951, the Animal Welfare Institute has been dedicated to reducing animal suffering caused by people.  We seek better treatment of animals everywhere—in the laboratory, on the farm, in commerce, at home, and in the wild."
